Boston Brand was a circus acrobat renowned for his breathtaking trapeze act as Deadman. During a performance, he was murdered mid-air by a mysterious sniper known as the Hook.

Instead of passing on, Brand was met by Rama Kushna, a Hindu goddess who revealed he was chosen to be a spirit granted the ability to possess the living. His task: to right wrongs and bring justice to the world, specifically to investigate his own murder.

As Deadman, Brand retains his distinctive costume appearance while possessing others. He can inhabit a living being's body, controlling their actions and accessing their memories and skills. While possessing someone, the host's eyes turn a distinctive shade of white.

Despite his powers, Deadman struggles with his ghostly existence and the burden of his task. He frequently grapples with the ethical implications of controlling others and his own longing for peace. He has collaborated with various heroes, including Batman and the Justice League Dark, in his pursuit of justice and the resolution of his own untimely death.
